Braces are orthodontic appliances that correct tooth and jaw alignment, using brackets, wires, and elastic bands to gradually shift teeth. Many adults choose braces to close gaps, correct crowding, or fix bite issues that were never addressed earlier in life. Beyond appearance, straighter teeth can be easier to clean, which supports long-term dental health. Wearing braces adds a few steps to your daily routine, but understanding how to care for your teeth helps you maintain your oral health effectively. Here’s more information on how to maintain your oral hygiene with braces:

    Attend Regular Dentist Cleaning Visits

Routine dental cleanings become even more invaluable when you have braces. Brackets and wires create small spaces where plaque and food particles collect, and these areas can be difficult to reach with a toothbrush at home. During a professional cleaning, a dental hygienist uses specialized tools to remove buildup around each bracket and along the gumline. These visits also give your dentist a chance to spot early signs of trouble, such as gum irritation or areas of demineralization near the brackets. Most dental professionals recommend scheduling cleanings every three to six months while wearing braces, though your provider may discuss a different interval based on your needs.

    Brush and Floss Teeth Daily

With braces, daily brushing and flossing are key to maintaining oral health. Brush after every meal when possible, angling the bristles toward the brackets to loosen trapped debris. A soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush works well for cleaning around hardware without damaging the wires. Take extra care around each bracket, since food tends to gather at the edges and corners of the metal.

Flossing requires more attention with braces, but several specialty tools make flossing between oral appliances easier. Floss threaders let you guide standard floss underneath the archwire so you can clean between teeth and gums. Orthodontic floss comes with a stiff end that threads through gaps without a separate tool, and it often includes a spongy section that cleans wider spaces. A small interdental brush can reach tight spots and clean the surfaces a regular brush might miss. Water flossers are another option, using a stream of water to flush out particles around brackets and below the gumline.

    Use Antibacterial Mouthwash

An alcohol-free, antibacterial mouthwash adds another layer to your routine by reaching areas brushing and flossing may miss. The rinse flows around brackets, wires, and between teeth, helping to reduce the bacteria that contribute to plaque. Choosing an alcohol-free formula matters because alcohol can dry out your mouth, and a dry mouth lets bacteria multiply more easily.

Swish the mouthwash for the time listed on the product label, usually about 30 seconds, and make sure to reach all areas of your mouth. Using it after brushing and flossing helps clear away any remaining loosened particles. Rinsing consistently keeps your breath fresh and supports your daily teeth cleaning habits.

    Get Personalized Advice About Braces

Your orthodontist understands the specifics of your treatment plan, so contact your provider for personalized advice. During regular adjustment appointments, ask about tools and techniques that suit your braces, and share any cleaning concerns. Following their advice throughout your treatment helps you stay healthy and get the alignment results you want. An orthodontist can show you proper brushing angles, recommend products, and confirm whether your current routine keeps your brackets clean.
