A family dentist provides dental care for children, adults, and older family members at different stages of life. Services may include preventive, restorative, and other dental treatments based on each patient’s oral health needs. Regular dental visits allow the provider to evaluate oral health and recommend appropriate treatment options. Here is more information on the services that a family dentist provides:

    Receiving Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dental care includes routine services that help monitor teeth, gums, and overall oral health. A family dentist is able to provide dental examinations, professional cleanings, and X-rays based on each patient’s needs. These appointments allow the dentist to identify changes that may require additional evaluation.

Dentists may also evaluate concerns involving gum disease, bad breath, or temporomandibular joint disorders. Treatment recommendations depend on the condition, examination findings, and each patient’s oral health history. A dentist can discuss available treatment options and recommend follow-up care when appropriate.

    Receiving Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry addresses teeth affected by decay, damage, or tooth loss. Some fillings repair cavities, while dental crowns can cover damaged or weakened teeth. A family dentist recommends treatment based on each patient’s oral health needs.

Missing teeth may be addressed through bridges, dental implants, dentures, or other restorative options. Bridges use nearby teeth for support, while dental implants replace missing tooth roots with implant posts. Dentures may replace several missing teeth or an entire dental arch. All-on-4® treatment also helps to provide an implant-supported option for qualifying patients.

Root canal treatment may be recommended when the tissue inside a tooth becomes infected or damaged. During treatment, the dentist removes the affected tissue before cleaning and sealing the tooth. A dental crown will sometimes be recommended afterward based on the tooth’s condition. Follow-up visits allow the dentist to monitor the treated tooth and overall oral health.

    Receiving Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry includes treatments that address the appearance of teeth and smiles. Teeth whitening helps address discoloration, while porcelain veneers cover the front surfaces of selected teeth. A family practice can discuss these options based on each patient’s aesthetic goals.

Dental bonding uses tooth-colored resin to address certain chips, gaps, or other cosmetic concerns. Treatment recommendations depend on tooth condition, oral health, and the changes each patient wants to address. A consultation allows the dentist to explain available cosmetic treatments and develop an individualized plan.

    Receiving Orthodontic Care

Family dentists may provide orthodontic treatment for patients with alignment, spacing, crowding, or bite concerns. Treatment options sometimes include traditional braces or Invisalign® clear aligners, depending on each patient’s dental needs. Invisalign uses removable aligners that gradually move teeth according to an individualized treatment plan. A dental provider can evaluate tooth alignment and discuss available orthodontic options during a consultation.

    Providing Specialty Dental Care

Some family dentistry includes surgical, preventive, and supportive services based on each patient’s dental needs. A dentist evaluates oral health, medical history, and individual concerns before recommending specific services. Some patients also receive referrals when care requires additional specialized treatment. Available services are able to include:

    • Removing wisdom teeth: A dentist may recommend removal based on tooth position, symptoms, and surrounding oral structures.
    • Providing sedation dentistry: Sedation options help some patients manage anxiety or discomfort during dental procedures.
    • Creating custom mouthguards: Customized appliances may protect teeth during sports or address nighttime teeth grinding.
    • Supporting special needs: Dental care is able to be adapted according to each patient’s physical, cognitive, or behavioral needs.
    • Providing pediatric dentistry: Age-appropriate dental services address the changing oral health needs of children.

A family practice can explain available services and recommend care based on each patient’s needs. Treatment plans are able to change as oral health, age, and dental concerns evolve.

    Schedule With a Family Dentist

A family dentist provides dental care for patients across different ages and stages of life. Services may include preventive, restorative, cosmetic, orthodontic, and specialty dental care based on individual needs. Treatment plans vary according to each patient’s oral health, age, and dental concerns. Contact a qualified family dentist to schedule an appointment and discuss your family’s dental care needs.
